The Bay Area Wrestling Association is back for another exciting season! This year we hosted a fall clinic at Peninsula Wrestling Club that proved to be a very popular event. Local coaches Armando Gonzalez and Lanz Kastl were the featured instructors. Wrestlers from various areas in the San Mateo area attended the event. BAWA will fielding a cultural exchange team that will attend training sessions, duals, competitions and visit the ancient city of Machu Pichu for the month of April 2011. In addition, we plan to take a full and competitive team to the CAUSA Association Duals in Red Bluff this May 2011. This year marks the 77th anniversary of the SFSU Far Western Tournament. It will be back on the campus of San Francisco State. Ashlee Sherman - Inducted into the California Wrestling Hall of FameLastly, I want to take this time to recognize a great wrestler, coach, mat official and mentor in our community. Mr. Ashlee Sherman has been a member in BAWA for the past forty plus years! I personally watched Coach Sherman compete at the local and state level and it was an impressive site. He was a great competitor. He brought great physical condititioning and masterful mat sense to all his matches. He represented the San Francisco Olympic Club in national competitions. He has been a Teacher and Wrestling Coach at Oakland Tech H.S. for over twenty years! His dedication to the community, our association is unmistable. This May 2011, Coach Sherman will be inducted into the California Wrestling Hall of Fame. Alexander Ostrovosky - Faces in the crowdAbram (Alex) one of the state's most experienced officials will be at the BAWA Championships in April. Abram has been an official in BAWA for over twenty five years! Abram was a national champion in the Soviet Union and has travelled to over thirty countries thought his wrestling trips. Abram has many great stories to share about his experiences as a wrestler and official. We are fortunate to have men like Abram in our association. This is a small thanks to another great individual who helps make our association special.
This year's goals include: *Increase the number of local events in the fall and spring seasons. *Continue to put on a quality events that average 150 athletes *Add an effective online registration system that will save athletes and parents time and money. *Increase the number of certified officials at each local event. *Improve the athlete and parent experience at a BAWA event by completing events within four hours. I am happy to say thus far we have achieved four of the five goals mentioned above. The area that will be the most challenging is getting 150 athletes at each and every event! We are struggling with finding the dates that do not conflict with other established events which make it difficult to attract the threshold we are looking for. A special note of thanks should be given to the following individuals who positively contributed to these events: Michael Klobuchar, Andre Mohney, Michael Guingona, Roger Brigham, Vic Anastasio, Ken Richau, Bill Gray, Doris Rudolph, Lisa Clark, Julie Glaungiger and Jackie Garcia. In addition, for the second year in a row, we were able to fill a full team and compete in the California USA Association Games. We have taken time to detail all of the events for this year on this website. Welcome to the Bay Area Wrestling Association "The State's Oldest Association". We are a non-profit organization formed in 1965 with the intent of developing wrestling programs and communities in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. In 2008, our association went through a restructuring phase. This year we will have a new group of members who will be managing the association. In 2008-09 we ran four successuful events. Our events ran releatively smooth and we were able to get athletes several quality matches while getting them out of the gymnasium by 1 and 2 pm on Saturday afternoons. We also tried several strategic changes to managing events. These included: hosting events on Friday afternoon, giving participation pins to all kids under 12 years of age and using a mat side staging system. These and other changes were made with the intent on providing a good quality match enviornment, maximizing the time of the participants and effectively using our human resources. This year we are hosting additional fall events and have a full spring schedule planned. We will also be co-sponsoring several cultural exchange events with teams from Mexico, Peru and Spain. In addition, we are working on providing development clinics at the events this year with national caliber athletes like: Travis Lee from Cornell University and others to follow We have taken time to detail all of the events for this year on this website.
